Red Hot Applesauce

Hello, hello! I hope you’ve all had a wonderful week. I’m currently in the thick of canning season for the year and have quite the stock of full jars piling up on my kitchen table. It is such a wonderful sight to see, knowing it will help to feed us throughout the winter.

As I’m frivolously keeping up with dishes and running the timer on my cold pack canner, I’ve continually had the thought to share a recipe with you that you may have not heard of. This Red Hot Applesauce is so easy to make. If you’re not into the home canning process, don’t fret! This is not a can-pack recipe. Whip up a batch of this to eat fresh and enjoy anytime you’d like. There’s a good chance you have the ingredients in your pantry, and if not, a quick stop at the store will have you ready in no time.

Pull out your slow cooker, chop up some apples, top with some cinnamon candy and you’ll have a fun treat by the afternoon. Just be cautious to cook this on low. Cooking it on high can cause the cinnamon candies to burn and scorch. We don’t want that kind of mess to have to clean up!

Red Hot Applesauce

  • 4 cups chopped apples
  • 1 cup cinnamon candy drops – you need the small pearl candy, not the gummy drops

Core and peel apples. Chop them into bite sized pieces. Add to a small slow cooker. Top with cinnamon candy. Place the lid on the slow cooker and cook on low for 4-6 hours, or until the apples are soft and mushy.

During this time, the cinnamon candy will melt into the apples to create the flavoring. If you have a hand held immersion blender, you can use this to puree the apple mixture. If you do not have an immersion blender, you can use a fork or a potato masher to break the apple mixture into smaller chunks. We like our applesauce a bit more chunky so we leave a few lumps in it.

You can serve this warm or cold. Whatever leftovers you may have can be stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container. We rarely have leftovers, and if we do, they don’t last long!

This recipe can easily be doubled, tripled, or quadrupled. Just remember your 4:1 ratio and you can make as much, or as little as you need.

Enjoy!
