A classic chocolate cake is always a great go-to for any dessert choice. This recipe adds a wonderful depth of flavor to your chocolate cake that is truly unmatched. While sourdough and cake may sound like an interesting combination, I can assure you you will not regret making this one.

Sourdough Chocolate Cake

  • 1 cup sourdough discard
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup sugar or honey
  • 1 cup melted butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 3 tbsp cocoa powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 1/2 tsp baking soda

The night before, mix together flour, milk, and sourdough discard to make a sponge. Let sit overnight or a minimum of 8 hours.
Mix in remaining ingredients, stirring well until fully incorporated.

Bake at 375 degrees in a 9×13 pan for 25-30 min. Let cool and frost with chocolate frosting.

For frosting, whip 1 cube butter, 2 tbsp milk, 1 tsp vanilla, 1 tbsp cocoa, 1/2 tsp almond extract, and 3-4 cups of powdered sugar.

Spread evenly across cooled cake and enjoy.
