Who can resist a delicious homemade cinnamon roll? I know I sure can’t. Using active sourdough starter in place of yeast makes your favorite treat so much more delicious than you’d imagine. While we love chocolate chips in our cinnamon rolls, you can customize these to your own liking.
Sourdough Cinnamon Rolls
Dough:
- 1/2 cup honey
- 1 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup coconut oil
- 1 1/2 cups warm water
- 1/2 cup active sourdough starter
- 3-4 cups flour
Filling:
- 1/4 cup coconut oil (additional)
- 1/4 cup coconut sugar or brown sugar
- Ground cinnamon
- Chocolate chips, nuts, raisins – optional
Mix together honey, salt, coconut oil, warm water, and sourdough starter. Slowly incorporate flour, 1/2 cup at a time, until a soft dough is formed. Cover and set aside to rise for 10-12 hours.
Roll dough out onto lightly floured surface in a rectangle, approximately 1/4 inch thick. Spread remaining coconut oil over dough. Sprinkle liberally with sugar and cinnamon. Spread additional filling items, if desired.
Starting with the longer side of rectangle, roll tightly into a tube shape. Cut into 12 even roll shapes. Place on a greased 11×14 pan and cover once more to rise a second time, until dough is doubled in size.
Bake at 350 degrees for 18-20
minutes, until lightly golden brown.
Frost with cream cheese frosting, or powdered sugar glaze. We like our glaze flavored with a hint of almond flavoring.
