Sourdough Breadsticks

If you are new to breadmaking, or even cooking with sourdough, I would strongly suggest trying this easy and fast breadstick recipe. Not only is it easy to follow, but it’s almost guaranteed to be a no-fail. You can store any leftovers in a ziploc bag, and they are just as good the next day! Give them a try and come back to let me know what you think.

Sourdough Breadsticks

  • 1/2 cup active sourdough starter
  • 2 1/4 cups water
  • 2 tbsp sugar or honey
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 4-5 cups flour

Mix water and active sourdough starter together. Add salt and sugar, mixing well. Slowly incorporate flour until a soft dough is formed. Let rise for 8-12 hours, or overnight.

Gently roll dough on a floured surface. Roll to about 1/2 inches thick into a rectangle. Using a pizza cutter, cut down in half, width-wise. Then cut 1″-2″ wide strips with the length of the dough. To form breadstick shape, fold each slice in half and twist each end in opposite direction. Lay strips onto a greased cookie sheet. If you would like a visual of how to roll and cut the dough for these breadsticks, check out THIS post – the non-sourdough version of my breadstick recipe.

Allow dough to rise again, until doubled in size. The time for this will vary, depending on your starter’s strength. It will usually take 1-2 hours for the second rise.

Sprinkle desired seasonings over the dough, just before placing in the oven. We like a little salt, garlic powder, and Salad Supreme seasoning.

Bake at 375 degrees for 20-30 minutes.
